According to Facebook, this feature was developed back then in 2014 at the time of Sony data hack. With the use of this feature, users can retract their messages from their inbox. The early version of this feature has been used by Facebook’s chief Mark Zuckerberg. This new feature came in the light when many users saw messages from Mark Zuckerberg disappear from Facebook Messenger.

We have discussed this feature several times. And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer – and have their messages automatically deleted. We will now be making a broader delete message feature available. This may take some time. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executive’s messages. We should have done this sooner – and we are sorry that we did not” says a statement, given to TechCrunch by Facebook.

Facebook had a feature of secret chat, where users can destruct sent messages within a particular duration of time. However, it is not clear that if the new feature will have a time limit to delete a message or not. According to reports “Facebook didn’t have details about whether recipients would be notified when a message was unsent and retracted from their inboxes, whether the feature would apply retroactively to old messages sent before the launch or whether users would need to designate a message as expiring/unsendable before they send it.
