With the NFL Training camp and preseason, we are a few days away from the start of the NFL Season.
With Sports Betting becoming legal across the United States and the industry gaining popularity by the day, we will look at another way to place bets on an NFL Game.
Let us introduce to you NFL Prop Bets.
First, you must know what a prop bet is. Prop bets are wagers or bets placed on anything other than the typical point spreads, totals, or money line bets. Like sports betting, Prop betting is becoming more popular throughout the industry, and the variety of prop bets is darn near endless.

What Are NFL Props Bets
As mentioned earlier, there are endless amounts of props you can wager on, and quite frankly, it can be overwhelming at first. But the most common NFL Props are player props.
Below are some examples of the most common player prop bets.
Rushing Yards: Typically, you can bet the over/under rushing yards a running back or, in some cases, a more mobile Quarterback may have in a game.
Passing Yards: Betting a Quarterback’s over/under passing yards in a game.
Below are Matthew Staffords and Joe Burrow’s props for passing yards in last year’s Super Bowl
Joe Burrow Passing Yards
Odds
OVER 279.5 Yards
-115
UNDER 279.5 Yards
-115
Matthew Stafford’s Passing Yards
Odds
OVER 284.5 Yards
-115
UNDER 284.5 Yards
-105
Using the above example, if you wanted to place a wager on Stafford’s passing yard props, first, you would choose whether you think his total passing yards will go above 284 or below 285.
If you think his yard will eclipse the 284 mark, you will place a bet on Matthew Stafford Passing Yard over 284.5 with -115 odds. Meanings, you would have to place a $115 wager to profit $100 if Stafford hits that number. If he doesn’t, your bet loses, and you lose your initial $115 wager.
Receiving Yards: Betting the over/under receiving yards a Wide Receiver or a Running Back may have in a game.
Anytime TD Scorer: You can place a prop bet on any player in an NFL game to score a touchdown. The odds will be lower for better or more popular players in that game compared to backups.
Again, using last year’s Super Bowl between the Bengals and the Rams. Here are a few players and their Odds of scoring a Touchdown
- Joe Mixon +110
- Odell Beckham Jr. +150
- Tee Higgins +190
- Tyler Boyd +275
- Kendall Blanton +280

Tips and Strategies
If you are new to betting on the NFL, starting with the NFL Props is an excellent place to start. NFL spreads are the most efficient lines in the market. An easy way to take advantage of these sportsbooks is to find inefficient or less efficient markets like NFL Player Props. Sportsbooks even tell us they are less efficient indirectly by lowering the amount of money you can bet on props.
Jack Miller of Establish The Run said it best, “Sportsbook puts less effort into props.“
So while player props are an excellent way to pad your bankroll, they are not profitable for long-term betting just because of the lower limits.
Just like any bet you want to place, you have to do the research beforehand. You want to ensure you are updated with as much information as possible, especially if diving into the player prop market. Below are some tips to consider before placing your prop bets.
- Consider weather conditions. Bad weather, like heavy winds, rain, or snow, may impact gameplay.
- Bet on familiar players, like players on your favorite teams.
- Research teams strength of schedule. You don’t want to bet the over on a running back rushing prop and then realize he is facing the best-run defense in the league.
- Bankroll Management. Be selective, and keep an eye on how much you are wagering on your prop bets.
- Always shop for the best lines and odds. Having access to multiple sportsbooks is key.
With the betting industry growing and the prop market becoming increasingly popular, the edge in props won’t last forever. Take advantage of it now while you still can.
