OPPO Global Research Institute has recently conducted world’s first 5G video call demo. The company has announced that the 5G call demo was performed with the help of 3D structured light technology. This demo is conducted in collaboration with Qualcomm. The 5G video calling technology is indeed a fresh element added in the mobile telecommunication industry.
World’s First 5G Video Call Demo Conducted By OPPO Successfully
Talking about the mechanics used in this video call demo, it was explained by the company that the 3D structured light camera from one of OPPO phones is used to gather portrait data that reproduced a 3D image portrait later on a remote receiver.
The 5G video calling is supposed to be commercialized by OPPO in 6 months approximately. Most of the OPPO phones will have this service. This service uses features like large capacity (mMTC), high speed (eMBB), and low latency (URLLC).
According to Tang Hai, Director of the Standardization Research Group of OPPO Research Institute, “OPPO engaged in 5G research and development as early as 3 years ago and has been actively participating in the international standardization to develop 5G products. In January 2018, we announced the 5G pilot program with Qualcomm Technologies, and are dedicated to becoming the first smartphone manufacturers to launch 5G handsets in 2019.”
“OPPO will commercialize the application of 3D structured light technology in smartphones and bring the ground-breaking technology to our customers in approximately 6 months,” said Bai Jian, the Director of the Hardware Research Centre of OPPO Research Institute.

“The Mobile internet is blurring the boundary between the physical world and digital world, while 3D content will be a factor to further improve the immersive user experience,” adds Chen Yan, the Director of Software Research Group of OPPO Research Institute.
The new 5G video calling technology is expected to give an enhanced experience in calling.
